Following a lightning strike nearby that, while it did not do any damage to my system, was altogether too close for comfort I am going to do a presentation on antenna lightning and surge protection possibilities, limitations and realities. The presentation will start with a short video about lightning protection from their I’ll discuss what I’ve learned from various lightning protection hardware vendors and how AI has helped me understand the issues and create a design I may implement for my system in the near future.
Bud Hennessy AE6BH is a retired electronics engineer who worked in the offshore oil and marine instrumentation industry for over 40 years. His company provided shipboard and oil platform monitoring systems for metocean measurements as well as hull and subsea riser and pipeline structural integrity. Much of this work incorporated radio telemetry systems including 6m meteor-burst data communications from the high Canadian arctic to Anchorage AK. Over the course of those years he spent considerable time in the arctic and Antarctic regions and offshore locations around the world, plus a year working on the ’87 and ’88 America’s Cup sailing races in Fremantle WA and San Diego doing much the same type of work. Bud has been a ham for 15 years and is primarily interested in the HF DX facet of the hobby.
